about

Getting this recording was a matter of luck and perseverance. It took is a month from first locating the animals in a reliable location, and recording night after night around the full moon when they were most vocally active.

Nights would go by without any sound of them, so it was just a matter of keeping the recorder running.

In the end, I nearly missed them... after replacing a dead preamp battery, I switched on the recorder and had begun to walk away when they suddenly began. I stood on loose river cobbles, balanced on one leg trying not to make any sound.

Fortunately, the stereo microphones were facing perfectly to catch the animals on one side, and their echoes off rock walls in the other. I've recorded dingoes elsewhere since, but never as evocatively as this.
