about

The rock outcrops of Uluru and Kata Tjuta are a symbol of the Australian continent and Aboriginal people's deep connection with the land. These places are rich in history, both cultural and natural.

This recording is a sound portrait of Uluru and the surrounding sandy desert country, what is often referred to as the red heart or red centre of Australia. It is a surprisingly abundant landscape, where microhabitats such as at the base of the rock create homes for numerous species of birds and other life.

We begin out in the mulga woodlands with a morning of vibrant bird activity, before taking the Liru Walk, a short nature trail near the base of Uluru itself. As the morning progresses, a gentle breeze sighs through stately groves of desert oaks.

At nearby Kata Tjuta, the wind funnels through narrow canyons and birdsong echoes from far off.

A trickle of water percolates into the small, sacred waterhole of Mutijulu, nestled by the base of Uluru, and as evening descends, fairy martins return to their roosts in a cave nearby. We conclude with a chorus of small frogs at Mutijulu and the sounds of crickets on the night air.

This is a remastered and expanded edition of our original recording from 1998.
