about

Australia is a land of unique and beautiful birdsong.

Researchers have recently discovered that songbirds actually evolved on the southern Gondwanan continent, before radiating out over millions of years to populate the rest of the world. Because of this, and further adaptations to Australia's harsh environment, Australian birds often display unique singing behaviours.

Some of the species we've presented here will be familiar voices from bush and garden; Kookaburras, Magpies, Grey Thrush, Willy Wagtail, Ravens, Rosellas and Fairy-wrens. The spectacular mimicry of the Lyrebird, the sublime duetting song of Pied Butcherbirds, and the ringing calls of Bellbirds are also renowned. Other voices may be far less well-known, but are equally pleasing; the Redthroat, Pied Honeyeaters, Gerygones and Mangrove Robin.

The album begins in bush woodlands, before moving to the arid inland of the continent. From the outback we visit the tropical north, the ancient rainforests of the eastern ranges, and finally coastal mangroves and riverine gorges.

We conclude with one of the most hauntingly beautiful of soundscapes; a hypnotic dawn chorus of Tawny-crowned Honeyeaters drifting across the heathlands.

This album presents both a journey around the continent, and a personal selection of our favourite songbirds.
