about

This recording takes you on a walk along a wild ocean shoreline, from beaches and into coastal dune habitats.

We begin on a golden sand beach, with waves breaking and whooshing, to fizz up at our feet. A Sooty Oystercatcher wings past giving piping calls, and later we come across a garrulous mob of Silver Gulls.

From the beach we move into the dune fields, to hear birdsong characteristic of coastal heaths and banksia shrubs; wattlebirds, grassbirds, coucals and fairy-wrens, while a White-breasted Sea Eagle calls as it circles serenely overhead. A little inland, we hear the tinkling of Bell Miners drifting across a coastal freshwater lake from the far shore.

Later we sit on rocks by a blowhole, as waves send plumes of spray booming skyward. As evening falls, the soft braying of Fairy Penguins wafts across the dunes as they return from a day of feeding at sea to roost in their burrows. We conclude with the playful lapping of wave wash in tidal pools and on a distant beachline.

These recordings were made on Australia's southeast coasts, and alternate between ocean wave wash and the distinctive soundscapes of littoral ecosystems.
