about

The tropical rainforests of far north Queensland are recognised as being of world heritage importance.

Occurring on the coastal side of the ranges, from mountaintops down to the coral sea, they are relic habitats of times when the Australian continent was wetter. These ecosystems are home to a wealth of rare and endemic species which share many kinships with the flora and fauna of the Papuan landmass to the north.

This recording begins in the mountain rainforests, with the voices of species commonly heard in the uplands; Wompoo Fruit-doves, Victoria's Riflebird, Stagemakers, and the amazing rhythmic vocalising of Chowchillas. Eventually we wait patiently by the bower of a Golden Bowerbird, to hear its enthusiastic mating display.

After passing by a softly pattering waterfall, we transition into the rainforest at night, with gentle frog choruses and a rich sussuration of nocturnal insects. After this, a new day arrives in lowland rainforest near the coast, and with the first light, a rare and curious Cassowary emerges from the forest gloom.

The recording concludes with a musical and hypnotic duet between two Black Butcherbirds.
